by Emily Horton

What is a wampus? Where was Scottie McCreery born? What is North Carolina's official State butterfly? Answers to these questions and many more may be found in NCpedia.

NCpedia is an award-winning, free, online encyclopedia that makes finding information about famous North Carolinians, state symbols, businesses, culture, geography, government, and the history of North Carolina easy for everyone. It is managed by the State Library of North Carolina's Government & Heritage Library, part of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. You may access it online at https://ncpedia.org.

An expansion of the eNCyclopedia, the State Library’s previous online encyclopedia, NCpedia has grown rapidly since its official launch in 2010. In it, you will find articles from the North Carolina Museum of History's Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine, wildlife profiles from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and more. It is hosted by NC LIVE.

Through a partnership with the University of North Carolina Press, entries from the Encyclopedia of North Carolina and the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography are being integrated into NCpedia. This expansion is made possible through a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

New articles, videos, and images are being added daily. You will also find links to additional reputable resources for further research. Check back often and watch it grow!
