On 30 Jan. 1940 an iceberg as large as a small island and extending six feet above the surface of the water was sighted in the Atlantic Ocean off Salter Path on Bogue Banks (Carteret County). Local resident Rufus Sewell, who had previously made several trips to the Arctic, stated that if the visible ice was six feet above the water, approximately 50 feet of ice was beneath the water. The iceberg was drifting westward.

Thank you for your request for more information. I have consulted several books on the history of Carteret County and Bouge Banks and cannot find any reference to the iceberg off of Salter Path in 1940. There may be mention of the discovery of the iceberg in a local paper. We do have a Carteret Co paper, the Beaufort News, http://catalog.ncdcr.gov/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=225753 which may have covered the story. You can view this newspaper on microfilm if you are in the Raleigh, NC area or you can request it through your local library’s interlibrary loan program. Please contact your library for more information.
