Wococon InletSee Wococon Island.
Wococon Islandappears on the White map, 1585, as composed of parts of the present Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands in Hyde and Carteret Counties. Port Grenvil, which see, formed its N limit and Wococon Inlet (an inlet, now closed, in Portsmouth Island) the S limit. Name probably derived from the Indian word wahkahikani (enclosed place; stockade). Appears as Gordens Island on the Smith map, 1624. See also Portsmouth Island.
