North Carolina's rich literary tradition spans centuries. Matilda Berkely, or, Family Ancedotes by Winifred Marshall Gales was the first novel published locally in North Carolina in 1804. Since then, many great writers have called North Carolina home.

The first playwright from the South to gain national and international recognition, he was part of that remarkable generation of writers who first brought southern writing to the attention of the world.

Thomas Wolfe
Thomas Wolfe was a major American novelist of the early 20th century. Wolfe wrote four lengthy novels, plus many short stories, dramatic works and novel fragments. He is considered to be North Carolina's most famous writer.
