Reed Gold Mineformer gold mine in E central Cabarrus County W of community of Georgeville. Gold was found there in 1799, and the discovery of a 28-lb. nugget set off a gold rush. Mine was the site of the first authentic discovery of gold in the state. Named for John Reed, on whose farm the discovery was made. Now a State Historic Site.
