LEE COUNTY

Lee was formed in 1907 from Moore and Chatham. The act was to become effective April 1, 1908. It was named in honor of Robert E. Lee. It is in the central section of the State and is bounded by Harnett, Moore and Chatham counties. The present land area is 257.26 square miles. The population from the 2010 Census was 57,866. Of that population, 38,688 were white, 11,565 were black or African American, 407 were American Indian, 489 were Asian, 20 were Pacific Islander and 5,286 were of a different race. Another 1,411 were reported to be of two or more races and 10,576 were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Sanford is the county seat.

Lee County is in the Cape Fear River Basin. Technically, parts of Lee County are in the Piedmont region and parts are in the Coastal Plain. However, for statistical purposes, Lee County is often considered a part of the Piedmont region.
