Black Wall Street

Parrish Street in Durham, center of African American entrepreneurship, ca. 1905. Black-owned businesses such as Mechanics and Farmers Bank and North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. originated there. Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois chronicled the area's growth.
