Brown Mountain

S Buncombe County E of Skyland.

Brown Mountain

on the Burke-Caldwell county line approx. 1&½ mi. W of Wilson Creek. Alt. 2,725. Noted for mysterious lights, known since 1833 in many popular legends. Many explanations have been offered for the lights, among them burning marsh gas, foxfire, and light refraction by the atmosphere of train, automobile, or city lights.

Brown's Crossroads

community in NW Randolph County. The former county seat of Johnstonville, which see, was there.

Brown's Island

a coastal beach island approx. 3 mi. long on the Atlantic Ocean in SE Onslow County. Now within the limits of Camp Lejeune. It lies between Brown's Inlet and Bear Inlet. Sometimes referred to locally by an older name, Shacklefoot Island.

Brown's Island

S Carteret County, approx. 1,189; mi. long, N of the E end of Harkers Island and separated from it by Westmouth Bay and Eastmouth Bay.

Brown's Sound

S Onslow County. Largely tidal marsh, it lies between Brown's Island and Onslow Beach and the mainland and extends from Bear Inlet to New River Inlet. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean through Bear Inlet, Browns Inlet, and New River Inlet. Now within the limits of Camp Lejeune.
