Charlotte

city and county seat, central Mecklenburg County. Settled about 1750; est. 1768. Named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), wife of George III. Appears as Charlottesburgh on the Collet map, 1770. Home of University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Queens University of Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, and Central Piedmont Community College. Center for banking services. Produces fabricated metals, textiles, dairy and bakery products, industrial machinery, canned foods, paper products, hosiery, processed meat, primary metals, aircraft parts, apparel, furniture, electronic components, boxes, and chemicals.
