Named for nearby granite monolith rising 225 ft. from the shoulder of Chimney Rock Mountain and overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge (see Hickory Nut Gap) and Lake Lure. Alt. 1,050. A post office by the name existed there as early as 1843. Long owned by the Morse family, monolith and surrounding area were acquired for a state park in 2007. |
