The Colton map, 1861, shows a community at the site named Black River. Corbetts Ferry there was taken by Gen. Richard Caswell on the eve of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Corbetts Ferry appears on maps at the site through 1865. Black River Presbyterian Church, est. there in 1740, occupies a building erected in 1859.
