Located in the W section of the state, it is bounded by the states of South Carolina and Georgia and by Macon, Swain, Haywood, and Transylvania Counties. It was named for Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), president of the United States. Area 499 sq. mi. County seat: Sylva, with an elevation of 2,047 ft. Townships are Barkers Creek, Canada, Caney Fork, Cashiers, Cullowhee, Dillsboro, Greens Creek, Hamburg, Mountain, Qualla, River, Savannah, Scott Creek, Sylva, and Webster. Produces corn, dairy products, livestock, hogs, paper, fish, lumber, Christmas trees, textiles, mica, granite, olivine, and crushed stone.
