The plumed serpent god of the Toltecs and Aztecs, called Kukulkán by the Maya. Some legends claimed that Quetzalcoatl was a god driven out by Huitzilopochtli and other gods, but that he would return and usher in a new age and faith. Moctezuma gave much credence to these legends, and possibly saw the Spaniards as the fulfillment of the prophecy.
