Hayes Library writing chair

Chairs with attached desktops could be used to write letters. In the antebellum period, written letters were the only means of communicating with distant friends, family, and business partners.The Hayes Plantation is in Chowan County; this photograph was taken in the reconstructed library in the North Carolina Collection Gallery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
