Mt. Chimborazo looms above Riobamba, Ecuador

A snow-capped peak is visible above the clouds beyond the rooftops of several buildings.Mt. Chimborazo is Ecuador's largest peak and is part of the string of Andean volcanoes known as the “Ring of Fire.” The nearby town of Riobamba is a popular jumping-off point for ecotourists who explore the volcano. It is also an important city for domestic trade, since it is midway between Ecuador's two largest cities: Quito and Quayaquil. For all these reasons, Riobamba is a bustling city with a growing population. Even so, the city has managed to retain its wide streets, colonial architecture, and colorful flora.
