Poinsettia plant in Quito, Ecuador

A poinsettia plant is in bloom.Poinsettias are native to South America and were well known to pre-Colombian peoples. Many groups have learned to extract a red dye from the branches. Their name comes from a North American diplomat, Joel Poinsett, who introduced the plant to the United States.
