Reed and thatch house in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Laundry dries on lines outside a small hut made of reed and thatch. A fenced-in yard sits to the side of the hut. Puerto Vallarta is a port town on Mexico's west coast. It is a popular port of call for cruise ships and has developed a vibrant tourism industry. The town is celebrated for its constant tropical weather as well as its beaches and adjoining islands. Recently, pollution from inadequate city sewage capabilities has caused health problems with its coastal waters, leading to a downturn in tourism.
