Response to Dunmore's Proclamation, Virginia Gazette, November 25, 1775

This is an excerpt from a letter published in the Williamsburg, Virginia paper The Virginia Gazette on November 25, 1775.  The letter responded to Lord Dunmore's Proclamation of November 7, 1775 in which he declared martial law in the Virginia colony and offered freedom to enslaved men in Virginia who would escape their Patriot masters order to join the British military. This letter is severely critical of Dunmore's proclamation and warns the blacks (most of whom would have been illiterate and unable to read the paper) not to fall prey to Dunmore's offer.

Issues of The Virginia Gazette are in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia.
