Sailboats on the beach of Manzanillo, Mexico

A man walks next to three small sailboats on the sand a few yards from the water. A few white changing tents sit near the sailboats. White apartment buildings climb up a tree-covered hill on the far side of the beach.Manzanillo is a large seaport town on Mexico's west coast. It was founded early after the Spanish conquest of Mexico and became an important ship-building port during the colonial period. The name of the town comes from the Manzanillo tree, which provided essential raw materials for building ocean-going ships. Today the town is Mexico's busiest port and a popular tourist destination.
