Stephen A. Douglas portrait

Portrait of Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861), a politician who served in the Illinois state legislature as well as the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Douglas was famous for his role in a series of debates with Abraham Lincoln, and his support for the Missouri Compromise, "popular sovereignty," and the Dred Scott decision of 1857.
