Stone arches in a church courtyard in Atotonilco, Mexico

Several stone arches surround a small church courtyard. The courtyard is empty save for some scattered stones. Trees loom beyond the walled courtyard. Atotonilco is a small village near San Miguel de Allende in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. The village is known as a spiritual center and boasts of a church constructed in 1740 that is famous for its very graphic depictions of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The village expands every year for religious holidays as thousands of pilgrims descend upon the village to visit the church and its surroundings.
