White umbrellas cover a vendor selling vegetables in a market. The vegetables include tomatoes, squashes, and dried hot peppers. A pink and purple painted colonial building sits in the background. San Miguel de Allende is a popular tourist destination in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. It is located in the highlands of Mexico, known as the altiplano. The town was founded in 1540 and is now considered a national historic site for its colonial architecture. In the early part of the twentieth century the town became the site of an American artist community. The art school founded by the Peruvian artist Felipe Cossio del Pomar attracted a varied population of visitors and residents that is reflected in the large numbers of foreign residents that live in the town today.
