Trekkers at rest

In Upper Hyangja, Nepal, two women carry bamboo baskets on their backs. The baskets are called doko and are commonly used for transporting goods across the mountain lanscape — or portering. Both men and women as well as their children work as porters. A man and two boys rests on the platform of a nearby house. This is a fairly modern house. The use of cement and concrete to build a house is a fairly recent development in Nepal and has changed the mountain architecture. Instead of thatched and tiled roofs, an increasing number of houses have flat concrete roofs. Instead of mud, walls are often now plastered with cement.
