Water filter in Diego Riveira's house
An old water filter sits in a corner on a wooden pedestal. The water filter operates through gravity. Water passes through a porous stone sieve into a container below. This filter is in the home of Diego Rivera, the famous Mexican artist. He, along with Frida Kahlo, was an important nationalist of the early twentieth century in Mexico. He was famous was for depicting the multiple races and classes of people that made Mexico's history. His medium was "al fresco", meaning he painted on walls while the plaster was fresh. His large murals still adorn the walls of Mexico City's Presidential Palace. Guanajuato is a large city in the central highlands of Mexico. It was an important colonial city because of the area's large silver deposits. Silver continues to be a major export, while tourism and industry round out the balance of the economy. Because it was an important colonial site, the city boasts of lavish colonial architecture and a historic city center that is recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage.
