Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Place Description
Morganton

town and county seat, central Burke County. Est. 1784 as Morgansborough. Alt. 1,182. Named for Gen. Daniel Morgan (1736?-1802), Revolutionary War leader. Western Piedmont Community College, est. 1966, is located there. Produces furniture, electronic components, hosiery, apparel, textiles, and dairy products.

Morganton Township

S central Burke County.

Morgantown

community in E Carteret County near the NW limits of Newport.

Moriah

community in SE Person County.

Morlin Mountain

N Rutherford County between Cane Creek and the head of South Creek. Alt. approx. 2,100.

Morning Star

community in E Haywood County on the head of Allens Creek.

Morning Star Township

former township in SE Mecklenburg County, now township no. 13.

Morris Creek

rises in E Caldwell County and flows S into Cedar Creek.

Morris Field Air Base

in Charlotte, central Mecklenburg County, was dedicated April 21, 1941, and used to train combat pilots during World War II. Named for Maj. William C. Morris of Cabarrus County, distinguished World War I pilot. Property returned to city of Charlotte in 1946 for use as municipal airport.

Morris Knob

S Wilkes County at the SW end of Gill Mountain.
