Tips for Searching the Gazetteer

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Place Description
North Prong Turkey Creek

rises in N Transylvania County and flows S to join South Prong Turkey Creek in forming Turkey Creek.
North Prong [Clarks Creek]

rises in N Mecklenburg County and flows SE to join South Prong in forming Clarks Creek.
North River

rises in Dismal Swamp, E Camden County and flows S approx. 18 mi. into Albemarle Sound. For a part of its course, it forms the boundary between Camden and Currituck Counties. Above Thoroughfare Island it is sometimes known as Indiantown Creek. Shown as Potaskike River on the Comberford map, 1657, but as North River on the Ogilby map, 1671, and subsequent maps.
North River Pocosin

along the W shore of North River in S Camden County.
North River Point

is the tip of S Camden Point, which extends into the mouth of North River.
North River Thorofare

between two groups of tidal-marsh islands in S Carteret County.
North Rock

island in Pamlico Sound, NE Carteret County N of Portsmouth Island. In 1795 the middle section of the island was submerged; the W end was called Great Shell Rock and the E end Little Shell Rock.
North Rocky Creek

rises in S Wilkes County and flows S into Rocky Creek.
North Rodanthe

See Rodanthe.
North Second Creek

is formed in NW Rowan County by the junction of Back and Withrow Creeks and flows NE into Yadkin River. Appears as Second Creek on the Collet map, 1770. Named because it was the second creek reached by settlers moving W from Salisbury, Grants Creek being the first. See also Withrow Creek.
