Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Place Description
Roland Knob

W central Yancey County between head of Roland Branch and head of Bailey Branch approx. 2 mi. W of town of Burnsville. Alt. approx. 3,620.

Roland Ridge

E Haywood County parallel to Ugly Creek.

Rolesville

town in E Wake County near the head of Cedar Fork. Settled in the early nineteenth century and named for William Roles, original settler. Inc. 1837; reincorporated 1941.

Rollins

community in S Burke County served by post office, 1881-1905.

Rollinson Channel

SE Dare County, provides access through Pamlico Sound from Hatteras Inlet to the town of Hatteras. Dredged to a depth of 10 ft.; 10 ft. wide.

Rollover Creek

rises in Great Dover Swamp in W Craven County and flows SE into Bachelor Creek.

Rome

community in S Johnston County served by post office, 1882-1904.

Rominger

community in W Watauga County on Laurel Creek. Named for Rev. W. Smith Rominger, a Methodist minister in whose home the first post office was est. in 1903.

Ronda

town in E Wilkes County on Yadkin River. Alt. 934. Inc. 1907. Est. on Col. Benjamin Cleveland's estate, "Roundabout," named for a sharp bend in Yadkin River there. The town's name is a shortened form of the plantation name. Produces furniture.

community in W Pender County.
