Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Kellumtown

a community of African Americans in SE Onslow County. Made up largely of people formerly living on land that became Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Air Station.

Kelly

community in SE Bladen County. Formerly known also as Centerville and Hungry Neck.

Kelly Cove

N Macon County on a tributary of Burningtown Creek.

Kelly Creek

rises in SE Henderson County 1½ mi. SW of Saluda and flows SE into Pacolet River. Lake Kelly, which see, is on Kelly Creek.

Kelly Mountain

S Transylvania County between Tower Creek and Cantrell Creek. Alt. approx. 2,980.

Kelly Ridge

N Macon County between Shope Cove and Kelly Cove.

Kellys Creek

rises in S Pender County and flows W into Rileys Creek.

Kellys Pond

on Southwest Creek in E Lenoir County. Formed in or prior to 1738 by a man named Marshall. Covers 312 acres; max. depth 10 ft.

Kellyville

community in SW Mecklenburg County served by post office, 1876-87.

Kelsey

community in NW Caldwell and SW Watauga Counties near Boone Fork 3 mi. W of Blowing Rock. Probably named for Samuel T. Kelsey, who operated a nursery nearby in the late nineteenth century. Also known as White's Spring.
