Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Place Description
Long Bay

in the Atlantic Ocean off the SE coast of North Carolina and NE South Carolina from Winyah Bay on the S to Cape Fear on the n. Appears on the Moseley map, 1733.

Long Beach

a section of outer beach in SE Brunswick County on the Atlantic Ocean W of Caswell Beach and E of Lockwoods Folly Inlet. Long Beach, a town there, was inc. 1955. A summer resort.

Long Bottoms

an area of approx. 50 acres of level old-field land between 2 mountains in SW Graham County on Snowbird Creek.

Long Branch

rises near the E border of Vance County and flows NE into W Warren County, where it enters Matthews Creek.

Long Brook

rises in S Catawba County and flows SW into Pinch Gut Creek.

Long Bunk

ridge in W Haywood County in Great Smoky Mountains National Park extending SE from Mount Sterling Ridge, with its center near lat. 35°41'10" N., long. 83°06'40" W. Lies between Andy Branch and Dude Creek.

Long Cove

N Swain County between Bearwallow Ridge and Long Cove Ridge.

Long Cove Ridge

N Swain County in Great Smoky Mountains National Park extending SW from Proctor Ridge, lat. 35°33'15" N., long. 83°36'25" W.

Long Creek

rises in E Swain County and flows SW into Una Creek.

Long Creek Township

W central Mecklenburg County, now township no. 11.
