Some place names included in The North Carolina Gazetteer contain terms that are considered offensive.

"The North Carolina Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary in which an attempt has been made to list all of the geographic features of the state in one alphabet. It is current, and it is historical as well. Many features and places that no longer exist are included; many towns and counties for which plans were made but which never materialized are also included. Some names appearing on old maps may have been imaginary, but many of them also appear in this gazetteer.

Each entry is located according to the county in which it is found. I have not felt obliged to keep entries uniform. The altitude of a place, the date of incorporation of a city or town, may appear in the beginning of one entry and at the end of another. Some entries may appear more complete than others. I have included whatever information I could find. If there is no comment on the origin or meaning of a name, it is because the information was not available. In some cases, however, resort to an unabridged dictionary may suggest the meaning of many names."

Nixonton Township

S Pasquotank County.

No Ache Bay

on the W shore of Hatteras Island in the waters of Pamlico Sound, S Dare County S of the community of Salvo.

No Ache Island

a small island in No Ache Bay on the W shore of Hatteras Island in the waters of Pamlico Sound, S Dare County.

No Business Creek

rises in NW Cleveland County and flows SW into First Broad River.

No Business Mountain

NW Cleveland County near the headwaters of Cox Creek. Said to be too rough to be surveyed. Local residents claim they have "no business" on it. Alt. 1,760.

No Creek

rises in S Davie County and flows S 4 mi. into Dutchmans Creek. It is said that an early settler bought land there, and the deed called for a creek. He complained that he found no creek on his land, but later, when he discovered one, it came to be called No Creek.

No Grease

riverside site in E central Hertford County on Chowan River approx. ¼ mi. N of Winton. A fishery there in the nineteenth century departed from custom when it kept no grease on hand, which meant that customers could not cook fish at the site.

No Honey Swamp

Noah Branch

rises in SE Buncombe County and flows SE into Rutherford County, where it enters Cedar Creek.

Noah's Mountain

in the Cane Creek Mountains, S Alamance County.
