After the Civil War, North Carolinians saw a need to expand opportunities for education, both at the K-12 level and, especially, in higher education. North Carolina State University was founded at this time, as was the first state college for women and the first of the state's colleges for black students. In this chapter we'll learn about who went to college in this new era, what they learned, and why.
